Most popular cat breeds in America

1. Ragdoll

This cat is big, soft, and cuddly, and it has big blue eyes that are usually focused on its owner. In the 1960s, free-roaming cats in a California neighbourhood gave rise to the ragdoll.

2. Bengal

Bengals are a relatively new breed that came about in the 1990s when an Asian leopard cat was bred with domestic cats and other short-haired breeds.

3. Siberian

It is a forest cat that has adapted to the cold climate of Russia. However, they were not brought to the United States until after the Cold War, around the 1990s.

4. American Bobtail

Find an American bobtail by looking for a bird with a tail that is about a third as long as you might think. Some are born without tails and are called "rumpies" by their friends.

The Maine coon is the official state cat. It was brought to Maine by European sailors, and its name comes from the fact that its tail looks like a raccoon's.

6. Abyssinian

In the 1860s, when Lord Robert Napier was on a military mission to Abyssinia, he brought back a cat with him (now Ethiopia).

7. American Bobtail

Find an American bobtail by looking for a bird with a tail that is about a third as long as you might think.

8. European shorthair

This breed came from Sweden and is still popular there and in other Scandinavian countries. This cat was raised in Europe with barn cats.

9. British shorthair

Even though Puss in Boots speaks with a Spanish accent, he is a British shorthair, just like the Cheshire Cat from "Alice in Wonderland." In real life, almost 2 million people follow Coby the Cat on Instagram.

10. Russian blue

Some royals like the Russian blue because of its soft, silvery-blue coat. There is a story that they came from pets that Russian czars had. In 1875, they were shown for the first time at London's Crystal Palace.
